Good Oral Hygiene Habits that can Guarantee Healthy Gums and Teeth
The oral hygiene habits of a person plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy mouth and smile. We are discussing below some good dental hygiene habits that can go a long way in maintaining your healthy gums and teeth.
1. Brushing- This is the most effective way of removing the plaque from the teeth as it can lead to cavities and decay. Plaque is a colorless and sticky substance that effectively clings to one’s teeth. When plaque combines with bacteria and food particles in the mouth, it can easily erode the enamel on the teeth casing cavities and decay. Dentists recommend that you should brush your teeth at least three times a day, after having meals and before going to bed. Only a soft bristled brush having a compact head is best for brushing and it should be replaced every four months.
Teeth should be brushed for about three to four minutes, at 45-degree angle in circular and short motions. All areas in the mouth should be brushed, your tongue, roof of the mouth and gums, as they are the places that are infested by the harmful bacteria.
2. Flossing- Flossing is necessary for removing debris and plaque that entangles between the teeth and along one’s gum line. Usually it is missed during the brushing. Flossing also stimulates the gums resulting in an increased blood circulation.
Usually dentists recommend that flossing should be done at least once a day and it is best to do it before going to bed. Sometimes gums bleed for first few ties when you floss them. However, once flossing is done on the regular basis, bleeding may stop.
3. Mouth wash- You should also use mouthwash at least twice a day. It should be used after brushing has been done by mixing it in some water.
4. Regular checkup with a dentist- Aside from brushing, flossing, and mouthwash, it is also necessary for you to visit your dentist on the regular basis for dental checkup. Usually once visit every six months is sufficient for maintaining excellent dental health. During your visit, dentist will clean your teeth and remove any stubborn plaque along the gum line or from your teeth. Dentist will also examine your teeth and mouth and can even order set of x-rays for checking any decay or hidden problems. In case of any new cavities, dentist will do filling for arresting the decay.
