Can Whitening Toothpaste Whiten Teeth?

The toothpaste is generally recommended for use after teeth bleaching procedures to maintain the teeth in a white condition. What should be understood is that whitening toothpaste will not change the natural colouration of the teeth or eliminate signs of tooth decay. Whitening toothpaste contains chemicals that help to break down the stains through repeated use of the toothpaste or by dissolving the stains on the teeth. The toothpaste may include some special abrasives that serve to polish the teeth in a gentle manner without causing any damage to the enamel on the teeth.

Using a whitening toothpaste on a regular basis will start the process to reverse the discolouration and stains on teeth. Most people with discoloured or stained teeth find it very embarrassing to smile in public for this reason. Brushing teeth twice daily with whitening toothpaste will start to show results within two to four weeks. It might take additional time for some people though. Some toothpaste brands contain a chemical called blue covarine that makes teeth instantly whiter and gives the appearance of less yellow coloured teeth.

Whitening toothpaste is considered safe by the authorities, but excessive use is not recommended as it can damage the enamel. It is preferable to buy toothpaste brands that have received the seal of approval from reputed dental organisations. The market is flooded with products for teeth whitening that includes toothpastes, gels, whitening strips and trays. Not all products work to whiten teeth, some serve different purposes like dealing with gum disease. When using a whitening toothpaste, it is advisable to avoid too much coffee, tea, heavily coloured drinks and red wine. These drinks will only defeat the purpose of the teeth whitening process and end up causing deeper stains and marks.

Teeth sometimes develop sensitivity to the toothpaste due to the light abrasives and chemicals it contains. If sensitivity does occur, use the whitening toothpaste for two weeks and then give it a break before starting up again.
